Sweet Cherries
Bing – Exceptionally large fruit with dark burgundy skin – almost black when fully ripe. Firm, sweet, juicy, purplish flesh. Excellent for eating, canning and preserving. Ripens in mid June. Bing is the leading commercial sweet cherry of the western states. Requires a pollinator, will not pollinate Lambert or Royal Ann. Zone 5-8 Black Tartarian – Medium size firm, sweet cherry. Fruit is purplish-black and juicy. Use for canning, preserves, fresh eating and juices. Ripens in June. Vigorous trees bear early in the season. Requires a pollinator. Used mostly as a pollinator for other varieties. Zone 5-8
Chelan – Large firm round fruit with dark mahogany skin. Good flavored, juicy, red flesh. Fruit is similar to Bing, but ripens about two weeks earlier in early to late June. Good for baking, eating, freezing and preserves. Vigorous, upright growing tree. Requires a pollinator. Zone 5
Lambert–Very large, firm, heart-shaped cherry with black skin and very dark, sweet flesh that is great to eat fresh. Ripens in mid to late July. Lambert is hardy and vigorous. Heavy producer, more resistant to late frosts. Pollinator required – Van or Stella, will not cross pollinate with Bing or Royal Ann. Zone 5-8
Lapins – Very large, crack-resistant cherry which has dark purple to black cherry with firm, sweet, delicious purplish flesh. Ripen in late July. Bears heavy crops. Outstanding for fresh eating. Good general disease-resistance. Self-pollinating and excellent pollinator for other sweet cherries. Zone 5
Ranier – Large, crack-resistant cherry which has golden yellow with a considerable red blush. Firm fruit with distinctive sweet flavor. Higher sugar and lower acid than Bing. Ripens in late June to July. Good for baking, canning, fresh consumption, and freezing. Vigorous, hardy, productive variety. Requires a pollinator, good pollinator for most varieties. Zone 5.
Royal Ann – Large, crack-resistant cherry which has golden yellow skin with a red blush. Fruit is crisp with a sweet-tart flavor. Good for eating fresh, canning and preserving. Ripens in late June. Pollinator required. Suggested pollinator Van or Black Tartarian, not Bing. Zone 5-8
Stella – Large, crack-resistant cherry which has heart-shaped cherry with dark red, nearly black skin. Firm, sweet, dark red flesh with good flavor and texture. Ripens in late June-July. Fruit is excellent quality and very similar to Lambert. Excellent for fresh eating, canning, freezing, and drying. Tree bears at a young age. Self-pollinating. Good pollinator for all sweet cherries. Zone 5-8
Sweetheart – Large red cherry with excellent flavor. Great for baking, eating, and preserves. Ripens in Late July to August. Upright tree is vigorous and heavy bearing. Self-pollinating. Zone 5
Utah Giant – Very Large, flavorful, sweeter and larger than Bing or Lambert. Dark red flesh holds color when processed. Ripens in June. Good for canning. Disease resistant tree. Pollinator required, such as Van or Stella. Zone 6
Van – Medium to large crack-resistant cherry which has dark, almost black skin. Firm, dark, semi-sweet flesh. Ripens in Mid June. Very cold hardy, reliable, heavy bearing. Tree is hardy, vigorous and a very prolific bearer. Requires a pollinator, excellent pollinator for other sweet cherries. Zone 5-8
Tart Cherries
Englich Morello – Medium, crack-resistant, dark red sour cherry. Tart, firm flesh is good for cooking and canning. Ripens in July. Frost hardy. Self-pollinating. Zone 4-9Meteor – Large, crack-resistant, red fruit with yellow flesh. Flesh is medium firm and medium juicy. Ripens in late July. Use for pies and preserves. Tree is a genetic dwarf that reaches about 10 feet tall. Tree is especially hardy, ideal for home gardens. Self-pollinating. Zone 4-7
Montmorency – Large crack resistant, red fruit that has firm yellow flesh. Sour cherry for commercial and home use. Ripens in June Excellent for tart cherry pies, baking, canning and preserves. Productive and very cold hardy. Disease resistant. Self-pollinating. Zone 4-7
Northstar – Medium, crack-resistant, red sour cherry with red flesh. Fruit ripens in early to mid July, but will hang on tree for up to two weeks. Genetically dwarf tree is excellent for the home garden. Excellent for canning. Vigorous and hardy. Self-pollinating. Zone 4-8
